In order to support doctoral, postgraduate, and undergraduate students in conducting scientific research projects and enhancing their knowledge of research methods and models, the Faculty of International Economics at Foreign Trade University organized a series of seminars on research methods on May 16th, May 17th, and May 25th, 2023. The seminar series included “Scientific Research Process” at 6:00 PM on May 16th, “Development Trends of Green Economy in Vietnam” at 6:00 PM on May 17th, and “Spatial Regression Modeling Methods for Panel Data” at 6:00 PM on May 25th, which attracted the participation of nearly 200 experts, academic staff, doctoral students, postgraduates, and undergraduate students, both in-person at the International Conference Room A901 and online via the MS Teams platform. The seminar series was hosted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Binh, Dean of Faculty of International Economics; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Tuong Anh, Vice Dean of Faculty of International Economics; and Dr. Luong Thi Ngoc Oanh, Vice Dean of Faculty of International Economics.

Delivering his speech at the series of seminars, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Binh, Dean of Faculty of International Economics, highly praised this initiative by the Research Methods and Economic Forecasting Department, considering it a valuable opportunity for doctoral students, postgraduates, and undergraduate students to learn and expand their knowledge of research methods and models. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Binh also emphasized that the Faculty of International Economics will continue to organize regular research methodology seminars in the future to provide the best support for doctoral students, postgraduates, and students within the Faculty in particular and the University in general.

To kick off the series of seminars, PhD candidate Nguyen Thuy Quynh, a lecturer from the Department of Research Methods and Economic Forecasting, Faculty of International Economics, had a presentation on “The Scientific Research Process.” In this presentation, the detailed and scientific steps from generating research ideas to research questions, research planning, and data collection were thoroughly explained. In the subsequent seminar session on the topic “Some Directions for Sustainable Economic Development in Vietnam,” the group of Ph.D. candidates, including Le Huyen Trang and Do Minh Thu, commenced with the presentation titled “The Role of Technological Innovation in Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction in Vietnam”.  The research team modeled the impact of new technological changes, as reflected in the number of patents, on greenhouse gas emissions in Vietnam. From that, they derived key policy implications for climate change in Vietnam based on this analysis. Following this, the research team consisting of Ph.D. candidates Cao Hai Van, Nguyen Hong Quan, and Dinh Thuy Tien presented their presentation on the topic “Experiences in Green Finance Development Worldwide and Prospects for Vietnam.” The research team introduced one of the highly effective tools for advancing green technology worldwide, known as green finance. By studying various experiences in implementing green finance in different countries, the team proposed some essential solutions to further develop the domestic green finance market in Vietnam in the future. The seminar series concluded with a presentation on “Research Methodology for Spatial Regression Data Analysis” by Ph.D. candidate Phan Thi Thuy Hang, a lecturer at Hanoi Metropolitan University. The author applied this research model to analyze the potential for attracting high-tech FDI in 63 provinces and cities of Vietnam in the context of the U.S.-China trade war, conflicts between Russia and Ukraine, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The content of the presentations received a lot of attention and questions from experts, academic staff, researchers, and postgraduate students participating in the seminar series. Thanks to this, doctoral students, postgraduates, and undergraduate students also received valuable contributions from experts, academic staff, and students both within and outside the University to further improve their future research. Through the discussion, the seminar sessions have helped doctoral students, postgraduates, and undergraduate students gain a better understanding of the research process, the development of the green economy in Vietnam, and the methodology for researching spatial regression data analysis.

Concluding the seminar series, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Binh highly praised the rationale and the valuable content of the seminar sessions. He emphasized that the academic staff of the Faculty of International Economics will always accompany and provide the best support to doctoral students, postgraduates, and undergraduate students in conducting scientific research projects, especially in successfully completing their theses and dissertations.

The seminar series concluded successfully, leaving a positive impression on doctoal students, postgraduates, and undergraduate students. They highly appreciated the hybrid format of both in-person and online organization of the seminar series and expressed hope that the Faculty of International Economics will continue to have meaningful support activities for them in the future.
