THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “ECONOMICS ON GENDER IN THE ASIA PACIFIC REGION 2024”

Aims to enhance the collaboration between researchers, educators, international organizations, governments, and non-governmental organizations through activities such as exchanges, interactions, and cooperation in research, training, and teaching on Gender Analysis in Economics. On August 8, 2024, Foreign Trade University in collaboration with the Gender Analysis in Economics Program at the American University organized an international conference with the theme “Economics on Gender in the Asia Pacific Region 2024”. The conference spanned over 2 days, consisting of plenary sessions and 5 parallel sessions with participation from numerous researchers and managers from universities in countries such as the United States, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan, alongside international organizations like the World Bank. Additionally, the conference involved experts and researchers from institutions, research institutes, and universities in the country such as the Vietnam Women’s Academy, National Academy of Public Administration, Thuongmai University, and Thuy Loi University, with notable speakers including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dương Kim Anh, Deputy Director of Vietnam Women’s Academy, Executive editor of the Vietnam Women’s Academy Science Journal, and Head of the Gender and Development Department; Master Ha Thi Quynh Anh, gender and human rights specialist, Gender Team Leader of UNFPA Vietnam. On the side of Foreign Trade University, the event witnessed the participation of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Ngoc Tien, Vice Rector; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Binh – Head of the International Economics Department, the unit responsible for coordinating the organization alongside the Program; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hoang Nam – Head of Science Management Department; along with many leaders of institutes, faculties, lecturers, researchers, postgraduate students, and students at the Foreign Trade University.

During the opening session of the conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Ngoc Tien – Vice Rector of Foreign Trade University and Professor Mieke Meurs, Co-Director of the Gender Analysis Program in Economics at American University emphasized the importance of gender equality, noting that it is not only a fundamental human rights issue but also a catalyst for sustainable growth and social progress. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Ngoc Tien pointed out that the conference is not only a platform for exchange and discussion among experts and researchers, but also an opportunity for cooperation between researchers, educators with international organizations, governments, and non-governmental organizations, to provide effective solutions in promoting gender equality and the development of gender economics.

The key speakers at the conference were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dương Kim Anh – Deputy Director of Vietnamese Women’s Academy, Executive editor of the Vietnamese Women’s Academy Science Journal, and Head of the Gender and Development Department; and Master Ha Thi Quynh Anh – gender and human rights specialist, Gender Team Leader of UNFPA Vietnam, both distinguished experts in the field of gender economics. The main speakers presented discussions on Gender, Gender-based violence, and gender stereotypes in Vietnam as well as the issue of empowering women and female leadership in higher education toward digital transformation and globalization. During the conference, experts from both inside and outside the country held a roundtable discussion on the theme of reducing the gender gap for sustainable development in Asia, covering current issues related to gender disparities in various fields in Asia and strategies for Asian countries to narrow this gap.

Following the opening session, the conference continued over two days from August 8-9, 2024, featuring in-depth parallel discussion sessions on various aspects of Gender Economics. The conference truly served as an academic exchange forum and a networking platform for researchers, management experts, educators, researchers, students, and scholars, contributing to raising awareness and opening up multiple research directions and collaborations domestically and internationally in gender economics.
