Climate change, environmental pollution, droughts, and crop failures have been a major problem in the last few decades.
There are many reasons for this phenomenon, one of which many scientists have pointed out is the current growth pattern of countries around the world. The growth model of inefficient use of natural resources will inevitably lead to a change in the environmental sustainability. Growth in that direction is a trade-off between future growth and increasingly depleted natural resources. Building a green economy towards sustainable development is necessary.
Faculty of International Economics (Foreign Trade University) cooperated with Japan’s Mie University to hold a workshop named “Green Economy Towards Sustainable Development” (Green economy towards sustainable development) on June 9, 2015. The seminar is the place where scientists exchange their research to raise awareness of the green economy and provide appropriate solutions to the green economy in Vietnam. Attending the seminar, there was the presence of the Principal, Dr. Bui Anh Tuan. The University of Mie had the presence of Professor Mori Hisatsuna, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Law and Economics. In the opening speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Anh Tuan highly appreciated the topic of the workshop while emphasizing the very important role of scientific research. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Anh Tuan affirmed that in the coming time, the university would have more policies to further develop scientific research activities within the staff of lecturers and students.
The content of the seminar was divided into two parts. The introduction was about the adaptation of the private sector to a green economy. In this section, Prof. Mori Hisatsuna presented the paper “The cycling of food by-products as feed by sustainable livestock industries – focus on the function of a co-operative organization to meet the demand and adjust supply” Agricultural waste is used as animal feed in Japan. Next, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tu Thuy Anh presented his presentation on “Vietnam’s coal import situation” and the impact of this activity on the environment. The second part of the workshop focused on practical policies to direct the economy towards green growth. In this part, the seminar listened to two lectures by MSc. Hoang Bao Tram on the theme “On the relationship between CO2 emissions and economic growth” and MSc. Tran Thi Minh Nguyet on the topic “Economic drivers of deforestation in Vietnam, policy implications toward green economy “.
